SUCCESS STRATEGY:

“Choose not to compromise on what's important to you. Live life on your terms.”

I had three young children under the age of five. I had just returned to work as a clinical neuropsychologist after being off on my third maternity leave in close succession. My time away from work had resulted in me and my husband living on our line of credit. Every month, we would pay some of it down, but by the end of the month, it was always back where it had started. At work, although they gave me holidays, it seemed like I had to beg, barter and steal to get them. A child with a fever would send me and my husband into a tailspin trying to figure out who could stay home that day. I found myself racing through my time with my family. The days all seemed the same: I would come home from work, microwave dinner, rush homework and shorten bedtime stories. My husband and I played tag-team and crossed paths on the hand-offs. It was breaking my heart that I had so little quality time with my family, but because I knew that we were better off than many, I kept doing what I was doing and tried not to think about it.

I loved the Arbonne products, but had never considered a business. I thought, “What would people think? I am not a salesperson. I have a PhD, for goodness sakes!” In spite of my personal reservations, I became intrigued as I watched my friend, NVP Valerie Darien build a prosperous Arbonne business while raising her family on her terms. I desperately wanted anything on my terms. Val showed me how I could fit my own business into the nooks and crannies of my day, without leaving my full-time job or rocking my family's already precarious schedule. I loved that people could try the products first so that I didn't have to “sell” to them. I loved that I could have repeat clients who order online so that I didn't have to run around with product and make change. Had these aspects not been present, this business would not have been possible for me.

I finally decided to get over myself and, for the sake of what was important to me, I launched my business. As my business began to flourish, our financial pressures were relieved and my husband and I found ourselves in an amazing position where we were actually designing our life. I have kept a piece of my profession through a part-time private practice — no longer because I have to, but because I want to. How great is that? We have been on so many amazing family trips. I get to walk my kids home from school and hear about their day. I am a present wife and mother. I am able to model to my children the importance of not settling, and show them what can be achieved with a strong belief, determination and hard work. I have shown myself that we have much more to offer when we allow ourselves to live outside our comfort zone, and when we don't define ourselves or let others define us singularly. What has been so rewarding is to have had a hand in helping others gain control of their lives as well ... what a gift that is!

My life right now would be very different had I not chosen to face my fears and listen to my heart. Had I not started my business, I would still be working full time, worried about lay-offs and trying not to be sad about compromising on the things that mattered to me most. If you are reading this and have a million reasons why you can't build a business — trust me, I was there. Just be careful that you are not throwing up roadblocks out of fear. If you were told that anything is possible, what would be the first thing you would change to improve the quality of your life? They say you can't change your destination overnight, but you can change your direction in an instant. If someone has given you this Eye on Arbonne, they believe you can make a difference. If you have picked it up on your own, good for you! I encourage you to find out more to see if this might be a fit for you as well. In doing so, you can make an informed choice ... you have nothing to lose, but potentially so much to gain.

To my husband Ken: I don't know how I ever got so lucky! I adore you. This would not have been possible without your love and support. To Owen, Natasha and Makaila: I am so proud of who you are individually. I love you so much — “to the moon and back,” my sweethearts.

To Mom and Dad: You taught me early that I could achieve anything if I was willing to work for it. I love and appreciate you both!

To NVP Val Darien: You are an inspiration, a role model and a very dear friend. You have taught us all how to lead by example. Thanks for always being the one who saw the big picture for all of us.

To AMs Jen Ingham, Cheryl Maloney and Marci Mawryczew, and all of the DMs and Consultants: You are the most amazing group of individuals and I consider myself so fortunate to be able to work with you. I am indebted for all that you contribute to my life, both professionally and personally. I can't wait to see what you will accomplish! Choose not to compromise on what's important to you. Live life on your terms!

To all of my Clients: There would be nothing if it wasn't for your loyalty and support. I am grateful for the relationships that we have been able to form. From the bottom of my heart, thank you!
